Biotechnology IPOs Have an Edge Over The Internet Giants – (FB, GRPN, ARNA, GILD, VVUS, CELG)


Companies in the biotech industry are not exactly household names such as Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) or Groupon Inc (NASDAQ:GRPN), but they can possess one advantage over the Internet giants i.e. better stock performance after their initial public offering. The greater part of the nine U.S. biotech companies that have gone public in 2012 are currently trading above their IPO price. On the flip side, Facebook’s stock price is nearly half of what it started in May, and Groupon’s is even lower.

Arena Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ:ARNA) made some recovery after a fall Thursday and surged +3.32% to close at $8.08 and its total traded volume during last trading session was 10.01 million shares, less than the average volume of 15.84 million. ARNA has current ratio of 7.55 and its total debt-to-equity ratio was 1.96.


Gilead Sciences, Inc. (NASDAQ:GILD)
jumped +0.11% with the closing price of $56.75 after Jefferies Group maintained its hold rating on the stock. The overall volume in the last trading session was 6.74 million shares. Its fifty two week range was $34.45-$58.84. The total market capitalization remained $42.94 billion.

In its share capital GILD has 756.57 million outstanding shares while 750.38 million shares have been floated in market. The company has insider ownership of 0.68% with its institutional ownership remaining at 90.16%. Company’s current year earnings per share grew 15.34% while the five year EPS growth rate was 21.78%.

But Jefferies Group downgraded VIVUS, Inc. (NASDAQ:VVUS) to an underperform rating after which it gapped down and reported the loss of -4.17%. The stock closed at $21.81 with the total traded volume of 6.17 million shares, less than the average volume of 7.24 million.

VVUS has outstanding shares of 100.36 million with the total market capitalization of 2.19 billion. The company has earnings per share of -$0.69.

Celgene Corporation (NASDAQ:CELG) fell -1.61% to close at $69.11 and its total traded volume during the last trading session was 4.42 million shares, more than the average volume of 3.28 million. CELG has current ratio of 2.93 and its total debt-to-equity ratio was 0.28.
